Double leg spring with tangential legs

Double torsion springs, double torsion springs and double torsion springs are widely used and versatile machine elements in the world of mechanics and spring technology.
The structure of a double-leg spring consists of a wire that is wound helically in even turns to form two separate spring bodies. The two spring bodies are connected by a wire, which is usually designed as a U-shaped bridge.
The legs or spring ends of the double leg springs are usually attached to the outside of the respective spring body. The force or moment is introduced either via the U-shaped web or via the legs. The double torsion spring is usually guided over a mandrel, axle or bolt.
Double torsion springs, double torsion springs and double torsion springs are used to absorb or deliver rotary motion, torque or force. Double torsion springs are characterized by the ability to absorb or release deflections, forces or torques around an axis of rotation. The legs may be arranged tangentially, radially or axially, with each leg having a different arrangement. Different spring end shapes can be attached to the end of the two legs, e.g. straight leg, hook shape, eyelet shape, round or square.

Double leg spring with tangential legs

The structure of a double torsion spring includes the following features:

Spring body:
The two spring bodies consist of two helically coiled spring wires in a helix shape. Both spring bodies are connected by a wire, which is usually designed as a U-shaped bridge.
The double torsion spring is usually guided by a mandrel, axle or bolt.
U-shaped bridge:
The web, which is usually U-shaped, creates the connection between the two spring bodies of the double-leg spring. The force or moment is introduced either via the U-shaped web or via the legs.
Thighs:
The legs or spring ends of the double leg springs are attached to the outside of the respective spring body. The force or moment is introduced either via the U-shaped web or via the legs. Different spring end shapes can be attached to the end of the two legs, e.g. straight leg, hook shape, loop shape, round or square.
Leg Arrangement:
The legs of a double torsion spring can be arranged tangentially, radially or axially, with each leg being able to have a different arrangement.
Thigh shape:
Different spring end shapes can be attached to both legs of the double-leg spring, e.g. straight leg, hook shape, loop shape, round or square.
Introduction of force or introduction of torque:
The introduction of force or torque takes place either via the two legs or via a U-shaped web. The applied torque is accordingly supported via the other part, the two legs or via the U-shaped web. The introduction of force or torque in the winding direction changes the angle between the legs and the U-shaped web.

It is important to note that the exact designation (double torsion springs, double torsion springs, or double torsion springs) may vary and are used interchangeably in different contexts. It is basically the same component that is used to create rotating motion or torque.

The mechanics of the double torsion spring:
The torque or the force that acts on the double-leg spring should be in the direction of the coiling in order to put less strain on the spring wire. A load on the double torsion spring against the winding direction is possible. However, this fact must be taken into account in the design and calculation.
Due to the structure and the introduction of force, the double-leg spring is subjected to mechanical bending loads. Accordingly, the calculation must be carried out using the analytical bending equations for wire. Here, the modulus of elasticity is an important material property.
In addition, double torsion springs are usually designed for fatigue strength. Here, fatigue strength diagrams for bending of the spring material or spring wire are of crucial importance.
If the double torsion spring is loaded in the winding direction, the inner diameter Di of the spring body is reduced, while the length of the spring body Lk increases. However, if the double torsion spring is loaded against the winding direction, the inner diameter Di of the spring body increases, while the length of the spring body Lk decreases.
Avoid narrow wire bending radii (wire bending radius smaller than 2 * wire diameter; r <= 2 * d) at the transition from the spring body to the two legs and from the legs to the different spring end shapes. Stress peaks can occur there, which can lead to premature failure of the material and thus of the torsion spring. The U-shaped web should also have a generous radius.

Comparison of a single torsion spring and a double torsion spring:
Compared to a simple torsion spring, double torsion springs can absorb significantly higher torques or forces.
Mechanically, the double torsion spring is a parallel connection of two simple torsion springs. This results in higher rigidity and the possibility of being able to absorb higher forces and higher torques.

Double torsion springs for optimal force distribution
Double torsion springs are used in the case of torsion or torsion springs in order to achieve an optimal distribution of forces over two spring bodies.
During the manufacture of these technical springs, one leg is connected to the other, resulting in a symmetrical shape.

Double torsion springs with inside or outside ends
Reiner Schmid Produktions GmbH produces double torsion springs in a wide range of possible designs on your behalf.
So you can find the right double torsion springs for every project and every location.
In most cases, the ends of the legs are on the outside of the spring body. Manufacturing with leg ends on the inside is more complex, but can be easily achieved using our unique modern manufacturing methods for CNC wire bending parts.
Our team responds flexibly to your wishes and implements the special features that the ordered double torsion springs have to keep ready. Thanks to the latest technology, we can implement almost any design for the double torsion spring.

The right double torsion spring for every need
Do you need a double-leg spring in a specific shape, size and wire thickness?
This is not a problem for us as a manufacturer.
Contact us and send us the desired specifications for your double torsion spring!
We would also be happy to provide you with samples and prototypes before we start the actual series production - so you can check the correct fit of the double torsion spring and give us new dimensions if necessary.
We usually make technical double torsion springs from spring steel wire (1.4310 or patented). in the grade classes SM, SH, DH), but can also offer you the following materials after consultation:

Materials for double torsion springs:

  • Spring steel wire 1.4310
  • Spring steel wire SM, SH, DH
